e-Invoice and e-Way Bill in TallyBook: offline JSON, IRN and e-way bill details
If your business is covered by e-invoicing, each B2B invoice has to be reported to the Invoice Registration Portal (IRP), which returns an IRN and a signed QR code. Goods movements above the e-way bill limit need an e-way bill. TallyBook prepares the data for both and keeps the numbers you get back, but the upload itself happens on the portal. Whether e-invoicing applies to you depends on your turnover and business type; check the current rules on gst.gov.in or the e-invoice portal.
Switch it on
Press F11 and set Enable e-Invoicing and/or Enable e-Way Bill to Yes (GST must be on). New entries appear under Display More Reports → Statutory Reports.
Before an invoice can be exported, TallyBook checks for:
| Detail | Where to fix it |
|---|---|
| Your GSTIN, address and 6-digit pincode | F11 and Alt+K → Alter |
| Buyer GSTIN, address, pincode and state | The customer's ledger |
| HSN/SAC of 4 to 8 digits on every line | The sales ledger or stock item |
Invoices missing anything show "Missing: …" in the list with the exact fields.
e-Invoice step by step
- Open e-Invoice. It counts invoices by status for the period (Alt+F2 to change it). Press Enter on a line to see its vouchers.
- In the pending list, press Alt+X (Offline Export). TallyBook saves one JSON file with every ready invoice and marks them as exported.
- Upload that file on the e-invoice portal using its bulk or offline upload facility, and download the response.
- Back in TallyBook press Alt+I (Import Response). Invoices are matched by number, and the IRN, Acknowledgement number, Acknowledgement date and Signed QR code are stored.
- No response file? Select the invoice and press Alt+R (Update IRN) to type the details.
Other keys in the list: Alt+N records an IRN cancellation (reason, remarks, date), Alt+O excludes an invoice, and Alt+T opens its transport details.
e-Way Bill step by step
- Open e-Way Bill. Invoices below the e-way bill value limit are hidden by default; F12 shows them. Confirm the limit that applies to your movement, as some states set their own.
- Press Enter on an invoice to fill e-Way Bill Details: Supply sub type, Transporter ID and name, Mode, Doc/LR No. and date, Vehicle number and type, and Approximate distance (in km).
- Press Alt+X to export the JSON for pending bills and upload it on the e-way bill portal.
- Import the portal's response with Alt+I. The e-way bill number, date and validity are saved.
- To cancel, Alt+N records the cancellation and Alt+J exports the cancellation JSON.
You can also reach both forms from the invoice itself: open a saved sales invoice and use the e-Invoice Details or e-Way Bill Details button in the right-hand panel.

Test before you rely on it
What TallyBook does not do: it does not log in to the portals or generate IRNs itself. It stores the signed QR code text from the response, but printing that QR code on the invoice is not available yet.
Frequently asked questions
Can TallyBook generate an IRN directly?
No. It exports a JSON file for offline upload on the e-invoice portal and stores the IRN that the portal returns.
How do I get the IRN back into TallyBook?
Import the portal's response JSON with Alt+I in the e-Invoice voucher list, or type the IRN, acknowledgement number and date with Alt+R.
Why is an invoice not included in the export?
It is probably missing a required detail such as buyer pincode or HSN. The list shows "Missing:" with the exact fields.
Does it handle e-way bill cancellation?
Yes. Record the cancellation with Alt+N and export the cancellation JSON with Alt+J for upload.
